NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An off-duty New Orleans police officer killed by a hit-and-run driver is being remembered as an exemplary officer who was liked and respected by his co-workers and by the people he served.
Meanwhile, the Crimestoppers organization is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.
Officer Rodney Thomas had been involved in a minor accident about 1 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 10. Police said he had gotten out of his car to check on the other driver when he was struck.
Police were searching for a late model white Porsche Panamera. They say the car involved would likely have damage to its right front side.
Thomas was 52. The married father of two had been a New Orleans police officer since 2005.
