NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans police officer arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident has been reinstated by city's Civil Service Commission.
The commission found the police department took too long to complete its investigation into the actions of Officer Keyalah Bell. The 34-year-old Bell was arrested in 2011 and fired from the police department in 2012.
Bell was key government witness in the trial over a deadly police shooting after Hurricane Katrina.
A state judge in January ruled the way the NOPD has traditionally handled its internal investigations sometimes violates officers' rights by exceeding time limits. That was the issued cite by the Civil Service Commission in Bell's case.
The commission ordered Bell reinstated with back pay.
