NEW ORLEANS (AP) - After voting last week for property tax
increases that weren't as high as Mayor Mitch Landrieu had called
for, New Orleans City Council members are preparing to move closer
to what Landrieu wanted.
Last week the council approved a 6.74 mill tax rate increase -
two mills lower than Landrieu sought. The compromise rate will be
7.74 mills, according to a Tuesday announcement from Landrieu's
office.
Landrieu also said he and the council have reached agreement to
raise a city sanitation fee to $24 a month per household - double
what it is now and a larger increase than council members had first
approved.
The council begins work on the compromise at a special meeting
Wednesday.
