Scheduled court proceedings over conditions at the jail in New Orleans are providing city officials with their latest forum to oppose an agreement between Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman and the U.S. Justice Department.
That agreement is awaiting approval from a federal judge, who was scheduled to hold the latest hearing on it Monday.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu says the cost of funding the requirements of that agreement could run into many millions of dollars.
He told the City Council last week that the sheriff's agreement could drain the city of funds it needs to provide basic services while fulfilling its own commitment to reform the New Orleans Police Department.
The city is responsible for funding the jail, which is run by the sheriff.
