LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A new judge has been assigned to sentence
a man convicted of making death threats to President Barack Obama.
Mikeal Minton has been given a May 20 sentencing date in Lake
Charles before U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi.
The Advocate reported that Minton was scheduled to be sentenced
April 14 in Lafayette. But the hearing was put off after
authorities said Minton wrote a threatening letter to U.S. District
Judge Richard Haik.
Haik removed himself from the case.
Minton pleaded guilty in December to mailing two letters from
jail in which he threatened to kill the president with a
high-powered rifle. Each charge carries up to five years in prison.
