New information on the crash involving a St. Landry Parish School Bus. KATC has learned the bus driver was Port Barre Mayor Gil Savoy.
Savoy is a retired bus driver who was filling in today on the route. His wife Camilla tells KATC, Gil is getting x-rays at Opelousas General Medical Center today. He hit the steering will hard and has pain in his sternum.
Savoy said he looked in the rear view mirror and saw the 18-wheeler approaching his bus fast. He told his wife that he yelled to his passengers to "brace themselves." The 18-wheeler rammed the back of the bus and pushed it. Savoy managed to grip the steering wheel and keep the bus on the road. He believes they were pushed about a mile from the impact.
At least four students had to be extricated. Two of the 21 students on the bus have critical injuries.
The children were rushed to hospitals across Acadiana. At least five were taken to Lafayette General Medical center. Three by AirMed.
The bus was on its second to last pickup en route to Port Barre High School. The school has students in all grades.
