NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal has hired a retired state police investigator to head up the department's cold case division.
Ackal tells The Advocate that Richard Fleming started last week by first investigating the 2004 homicide of Carrie Billeaud, a 62-year-old New Iberia woman found beaten to death at her business.
Fleming estimated the parish has about seven unsolved homicides dating back 20-plus years.
He said sometimes all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes and ears to spark new leads in a case.
