The New Iberia City Council is considering an ordinance that would increase sewer user fees by 30 percent. The ordinance also sets the first consumer price index (CPI) for residential and commercial users that would take effect January 1, 2014. Sewer user fees haven't been adjusted in 12 years.
New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry says the wastewater fund is operating at a $1.3 million deficit.
Because of that, establishing a new fee rate is the council's only option to make the city eligible for a $6 million loan from the state.
The city needs $6 million to complete a court-ordered consent decree it entered into in 2005.
The ordinance will be up for adoption at the council's next meeting on April 2. If approved, it will take effect May 1.
