New Iberia voters may be voting on a new tax proposition in April.
The city council will vote on December 17 to put a half-cent sales tax proposal on the April 5 ballot. Half of that tax would be dedicated to public works, while the other half would go towards public safety, including law enforcement, fire protection, and the permits department.
Mayor Hilda Curry says except for a tax dedicated to firefighters' pay, the city has not raised sales taxes in 20 years. Curry adds that government consultants recently reviewed the city's finances and found that the New Iberia is not collecting enough money to cover its expenses.
The December 17 meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at New Iberia City Hall.
