For the first time in 12 years, the New Iberia City Council approved an ordinance that will increase sewer user fees by 30%. Mayor Hilda Curry says the waste water fund is operating at a $1.3M deficit, forcing the council to establish the new fee rate. Curry says, this is the council's only option to make the city eligible for a $6-Million loan from the State, which is needed to complete a court-ordered consent decree it entered into in 2005. Mayor Curry says, "We wouldn't be here today looking at an increase if there would have been a CPI increase. We certainly do not want to cause a burden for anyone living in the city, but all utilities have increased in the past 10-12 years, and we have not increased our fees." The rate hike will take effect May 1st.
