The investigation continues into why a helicopter crashed in the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday morning.
The crash happened about 30 miles northeast of Venice. Four people were on board and all were taken to the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. Two people have injuries and are still in the hospital. The third person wasn't hurt, but was kept overnight for observation and released this morning.
This morning, the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office said the pilot, 47-year-old Patrick Becnel of Belle Chasse, died after the crash.
He was a charter pilot for Panther Helicopters. Becnel also served more than eight years with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office as a pilot, retiring last October. His cousin tells us Patrick was raised in Belle Chasse and was very active in the community, serving as a deacon in Port Sulpher. He was also very involved with his family's citrus farm
The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office is conducting an autopsy and has not released a preliminary cause of death.
