The first day of school for University of Louisiana at Lafayette students is Monday August 23. This year, there's a new requirement for many of the school's first time freshmen.

Students will be required to take a two credit hour course. It's part of the university's Quality Enhancement Plan. The course is aimed at helping students achieve greater academic success.

Freshmen will learn about career planning, plus time and money management. They will also participate in community service projects.

The course was first piloted in six classes. This year, a few more classes will be added. By 2014, all freshmen will be required to take the one semester course. Class sizes will be limited to 25 students.
