(November 2, 2009) - The official name of the City of Opelousas' new civic center will be unveiled to the public this week during the City Council Committee Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at 4:00 pm.
The new name is the result of a month long community wide "name the center" contest launched by Opelousas Mayor Donald Cravins and the City Council. In August, individuals were encouraged to submit their name suggestions for the City of Opelousas' future event center. Since then, the City has received hundreds of name submissions.
Meanwhile, construction on the facility, located in the former KrogerBuilding off of Creswell Lane, is scheduled to be completed at the end of the year. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, which recently purchased the building, has allocated 10-thousand square feet of the 48-thousand square foot building to the City. The remaining 38-thousand square feet is expected to be used for regional office for the department of agriculture with space for local offices of the United States Department of Agriculture.
The winning name selected will receive a prize package valued at over $250. For more information, contact the Mayor's Office at 337-948-2520.
