Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a three year $1.9 million 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant by the Department of Education and the Office of Student Programs of the State of Louisiana. The title of the funded program is CLASS 21 (Cultivating Lifelong Achievement and Student Success in the 21st Century). It will service over 500 students annually. These students will be from three Iberia Parish School System elementary schools including the schools below.
· Pesson Elementary
· Park Elementary
· Johnston Hopkins Elementary
The main goal of this program is to establish a sustainable, community-based network of qualified and caring adults to provide a coordinated extended learning time program. In order to accomplish this goal, and in accordance with our organization's mission, the BGC Class 21 will help students with a variety of programs. One of these programs is Power Hour. Power Hour is a homework help and tutoring program. It encourages members to develop the daily habit of completing homework and study in a quiet, dedicated space with adult support. The Triple Play program strives to improve the overall health of students by increasing their daily physical activity; teaching them good nutrition and helping them develop healthy relationships. The SMART Moves program is A Skills Mastery and Resistance Training program which is a prevention program that works by exposing students to protective factors that promote positive behaviors, health, well-being and personal success.
BGC will partner with Sylvan Learning Center of Acadiana to also offer students the "Catch Up" with Ace It! Tutoring program. In this program certified teachers will deliver reading and math remediation. It will provide students at each site with a small-group targeted academic intervention program that incorporates hands-on learning and explicit instruction to help students close their skill deficits.
The programs will take place from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday at the three schools mentioned above. For more information please contact Anesha J. Burgess, CLASS 21 Project Director at 337-322-4074, or the school (Pesson Elementary, Park Elementary or Johnston Hopkins Elementary) your child attends for more information. The program is slated to begin October 7, 2013, in all three schools.
