The deadly Hilcorp Energy Company gas well explosion Thursday afternoon rocked the small neighborhood that sits right behind the well site. For many residents, the accident hit a little too close to home.
"Well I was at work and I saw the cops and the sirens and I saw them going behind my momma's house so I call my momma to see what was going on," said Layla Thibodeaux.
Thibodeaux and her younger brother Gavin Romero were shocked when they heard that the Hilcorp Energy gas well head had ruptured around 12:30 p.m., right behind their house.
"I mean it's in my backyard, it's close," said Romero. "It's very scary," added Thibodeaux.
It was also deadly, the explosion killed one Hilcorp employee and injured others.
"I just feel for them and I feel for the family," said Thibodeaux.
Hilcorp issued a statement saying: "We are deeply saddened by the death and injuries which occurred during this incident... The cause of the incident has not been determined pending a full investigation."
"I'm sure the coroner will have to determine a cause of death and through the investigation I'm sure they'll try and determine exactly what happened," said Lt. Craig Stansbury with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.
Though Thibodeaux and Romero are safe and sound Thursday night, they're still shaken by what happened earlier in the day.
"It's scary because my dad works on that stuff, knowing that might be able to happen to him that's the scariest part," said Romero.
