A 15-minute phone conversation last night between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner is being followed by a series of meetings today involving Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, a senior White House aide and the four top leaders of the House and Senate. Little progress has been seen in efforts to avert the spending cuts and tax increases set to take effect in January. Obama is mounting a public campaign to build support for his position, which includes letting taxes rise for the wealthiest Americans.
