The Giant Omelette traces its history to Napoleon. According to legend Napoleon and his army were traveling in the south of France and stayed the night in Bessieres. A local innkeeper prepared an omelette that delighted Napoleon so much he ordered the townspeople to gather eggs from the nearby villages and cook a giant omelette to feed his troops.
The tradition is now celebrated by 7 towns worldwide, all with ties to France. Abbeville hosts the nation's only Giant Omelette Celebration the first weekend in November.
More than 5,000 eggs are used with Louisiana ingredients to cook the giant omelette over a wood fire in downtown Abbeville Sunday afternoon.
