New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is urging people to pay property taxes online or by mail this year, rather than lining up to pay at City Hall during a month including the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras parades.

A city news release notes that both events are likely to tie up traffic and parking. City Hall is catty corner to the Superdome.

The city charges a 2.49 percent processing fee for credit or debit card payments. There's no charge if you authorize direct transfer from your checking account .

The city began mailing bills Wednesday. Payments are due Jan. 31.

At http://www.nola.gov/pay-taxes, click on "pay real estate tax" to pay or see bills.

The required tax bill number can be found at www.nolaassessor.com or by calling (504) 658-1712. For business personal property tax numbers, call (504) 658-1350.
