NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans man has pleaded guilty to fraudulently receiving Social Security benefits intended for his late mother.

Forty-year-old Lam Nguyen (win) faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine following his guilty plea Thursday to theft of government funds.

Federal prosecutors say Nguyen continued receiving Social Security checks that were mailed to his mother's New Orleans home after she died in Vietnam in 2002 and deposited the money into his bank account.

A court filing says the case involves more than $47,000 in restitution, but it doesn't specify how much Nguyen received.

His sentencing is set for May 15.
