NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans police detective has been charged with conspiring to steal roughly $3,600 from a nonprofit group that assists homeless families.
A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted 37-year-old Tiwana Alexander on charges of conspiracy and theft of federal funds.
Alexander allegedly conspired with a former case manager who worked for the House of Ruth to steal money that she used to pay her rent in 2007. Prosecutors say Alexander wasn't homeless or jobless at the time and knew she didn't qualify for the funds.
Alexander faces a maximum sentence of 10 years and a $250,000 fine if she's convicted of the charges.
The former case manager and two other people already have pleaded guilty in the case.
