Municipal races, tax propositions on April 5 ballot

Voters in five parishes will be going to the polls on April 5 to elect new municipal and parish officials.

More than half of the races--18 out of 34--have been filled by unopposed candidates. However, some big races will be contested.

In St. Landry Parish, four people will vie for the District 10 school board seat vacated by Quincy Richard last year.

In St. Martinville, Mayor Thomas Nelson is seeking another term in office. He will face off against two opponents--Bernard Mitchell, Jr., and Melinda Narcisse Mitchell--for the seat.

Two other mayors will also face competition as they seek extra terms in office. In Kaplan, Mayor Kirk Champagne will run against alderman at large Gerard "Jerry" Touchet. In Franklin, Mayor Raymond Harris will face Kenny Scelfo, Sr., in the primary.

Several other parishes will go to the polls to approve tax proposals and renewals.
