THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - A 27-year-old man has died from injuries
suffered in a weekend fight, turning Mother's Day into a day of
mourning for a family.
Courtney "Bleek" Allen had been on life-support since Friday
when he was knocked to the ground and hit his head, said Thibodaux
Police Chief Craig Melancon. Allen died Sunday at Thibodaux
Regional Medical Center after being taken off life support, he
DeCraig Young, 20, who was fighting with Allen, was arrested on
a charge of second-degree battery. The charge was upgraded to
manslaughter on Sunday, Melancon said. He was jailed in lieu of
Allen allegedly intended to avenge a fight he had with Young
earlier in the week. Authorities said Allen called and challenged
Young to meet him outside an apartment complex in Thibodaux.
Young called friends and family as backup and waited outside for
Allen and his friends. Meeting in the parking lot about 9 p.m.,
Young hit Allen, who fell backward and hit his head on the asphalt,
Several callers notified police about the fight and when
officers arrived, they found Allen unconscious in the parking lot.
He never regained consciousness, Melancon said.
On Sunday, Allen's family struggled to understand why anyone
would want to harm someone they described as a quiet and humble man
who adored his mother. Linda Allen, his mother, is heartbroken,
family and friends said.
"It's senseless," longtime family friend Lisa Price said.
"It's a very sad Mother's Day."
