Mother Sentenced in Death of Son

DERIDDER, La. (AP) - Holly A. Brewer has been sentenced to five
years in prison after pleaded guilty in June to second-degree
cruelty to a juvenile.
State District Judge C. Kerry
Anderson sentenced the 21-year-old Brewer on Thursday.
Her son, 18-month-old John Thomas Anthony Brewer, died from
injuries inflicted by her boyfriend, Jeffery Denby, on June 22,
2009. Denby was sentenced to life in prison in May.
Sam Jones, Brewer's attorney, argued the sentence was excessive
and said he will appeal it.
