SLIDELL, La. (AP) - The mother of the newborn baby boy abandoned in Pearl River on Monday has been booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.
Capt. George Bonnett says 35-year-old Kimberly Lee was booked Thursday with one count each of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion.
Lee was hospitalized Tuesday, one day after giving birth. The baby remains at the hospital, but Bonnett says the child is no longer in critical condition and is improving.
Officers say Lee's 15-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son found the crying baby on the ground in the backyard of the family's Pearl River home on Tuesday. The baby's umbilical cord was still attached, the sheriff's office said.
Investigators say Lee had hidden the birth from her family.
