Mother Loses Unborn Child After Hit and Run

A family is mourning the loss of an unborn child after a hit and run accident over the weekend.

Carencro police say Luis Ortiz is charged in the crash this weekend which occurred in the 300 block of West Gloria switch Road. Police say, Ortiz was driving a car without headlights when he hit another vehicle and then ran away from the scene.

Chasity Benoit was a passenger in the vehicle hit. She lost her 6-month old unborn child, Cullen Faulk, because of the crash after she arrived at the hospital.

"They sent me up to labor and delivery and when they did the ultrasound there, the heartbeat kept dropping. It was 80 and it kept dropping. Next thing I know, the nurses and doctors are running all over and I'm in surgery and that's it. It all happened so fast," Benoit said.

Ortiz is charged with hit and run, but could face additional charges for the death of the unborn child.
