Around 10:30 Thursday morning when deputies were called to a home here near Kaliste Saloom Road and E-Broussard Road in Lafayette. According to the arrest affidavit, deputies say 21-year-old Landon Broussard showed up to his grandmother's house, carrying the badly bruised, naked body of the 3-year-old boy.
"He had access to a phone to dial for emergency services. He drove some distance to get to his grandmothers house after having found the child lifeless," Captain Kip Judice of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department said.
According to the affidavit, Broussard told his grandmother a door had fallen on the boy. She called 9-1-1 hoping he could be revived, but it was too late. After further investigation, police say the boy had suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head, face and neck. He also had a split lip, part of one ear was torn, and there were also apparent traumatic injuries to the boy's privates. Detectives searched the home of Broussard and what they found is quite disturbing. In the childs bedroom, police found a red face, print they believe to be blood, five feet off the ground. They also found a shirt with blood on the collar and several bloodied hand towels in Broussards' truck. Police say injuries on the boys body revealed that some were much older and some were new.
"That's what we're kind of basing our charges on is an extended period of abuse plus the major injuries that occurred to him either late last night or early this morning," Judice said.
Broussard is now being charged with First Degree Murder. An interview of the victim's mother, 22-year-old Laura Smith, found that she claims she was also abused by Broussard. She is being charged with Principal to First Degree murder. Police believe she had the opportunity to remove the boy from the situation, or inform police, but failed to do so.
