The Port of Morgan City has received $100,000 in state money to go ahead with preliminary design work on a proposed government and operations training center.
The Daily Review reports the facility also would serve as an emergency operating center.
Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin, says the Legislature dedicated the funding during its recently completed session.
The center could house the Coast Guard, U.S. Customs, port officials, as well as the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office and state police if needed, Port of Morgan City Executive Director Jerry Hoffpauir says.
Total engineering fees for the project are estimated at $900,000.
