MONROE, La. (AP) - Now that three new members are joining Monroe City Council, Mayor Jamie Mayo fears they'll try to rescind the increased sewer rates.
The News-Star reports (http://tnsne.ws/ROijHK ) the city council last month gave final approval to an amended ordinance that raised sewer rates for customers.
The new rates will go into effect Jan. 1, but residents won't see the increase until their February bill.
The new sewer rates will be $3.55 per 1,000 gallons for city residents and $5.33 per 1,000 gallons for customers outside city limits.
Dr. Ray Armstrong, Betty Blakes and Kenneth Wilson will join incumbents Eddie Clark and Gretchen Ezernack to form the new City Council.
Mayo says if the new rates are rescinded, it could delay much-needed repairs to an antiquated system, eventually causing problems for residents.
