MONROE, La. (AP) - The 2012 overall crime rate for the city of Monroe decreased just over 5 percent compared to the previous year. That's according to Monroe Police Chief Quentin Holmes, who released Monroe's statistics Monday.
During 2012, Monroe police recorded a total of 13,254 crimes. The largest increase in crime was robberies. There were 126 robberies in 2011 and 140 in 2012. The largest reduction was burglaries. There were 1,473 burglaries in 2011 and 1,090 in 2012.
For other violent crimes during 2012, Monroe recorded six murders, down from eight in 2011; 27 rapes, down from 20 in 2011; 1,631 assaults and batteries, up from 1,583 in 2011; and 86 auto thefts, down from 104 in 2011.
