Monroe council to vote on new budget

The Monroe City Council is set to adopt the budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year. The council meets Tuesday night at City Hall.
The $58.9 million budget is $1 million more than last year's budget. Director of Administration David Barnes tells The News-Star that additional money comes from increases in sales tax revenues.
Barnes said about 73 percent of the budget comes from sales taxes, 13 percent from property taxes, and the rest from fees.
Barnes also said 72 percent of the city's expenses are for benefits and payroll, but more payroll might be a sticking point in the final adoption of the budget.
