MONROE, La. (AP) - The Monroe City Council is expected to call for a special election this week to give citizens the opportunity to vote on term limits for all council members and the office of the mayor.
The term-limit measure is expected to be placed on November's ballot.
If approved by voters, term limits would go into effect following the present term of the mayor and council members.
The News-Star reports the measure, for consideration on Tuesday, calls for voters to decide on establishing term limits of three consecutive terms for the mayor and council members.
Mayor Jamie Mayo has opposed the term limit measure, saying people have the ability to remove people from office every four years during elections.
