The city of Monroe will accept applications for a new fire chief through May 15.
Mayor Jamie Mayo tells The News-Star the official fire chief test will be administered on June 12.
Terry Williams was selected late February to serve as the interim fire chief to replace former Chief Jimmie Bryant, who was named the city's chief operating officer.
Mayo expects a number of applicants will continue to apply for the position, saying it's one of the better fire departments in the country.
Monroe has maintained a Class 1 fire rating since 2002.
A Class I fire rating is the highest a fire department can receive. Higher ratings help lower property insurance rates for businesses and homeowners.
