JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Southeastern Conference official says
the Confederate symbol on the Mississippi flag could hurt the
state's bid to host the SEC baseball tournament starting in 2012.
Craig Mattox, the SEC assistant commissioner for championships,
says the emblem "would not be a 100 percent deal breaker" but
would be one of several factors considered as athletic directors
choose a tournament site.
The Confederate battle emblem - 13 white stars on a blue X over
a red field - has been part of the Mississippi flag since 1894. In
2001, state residents voted to keep the symbol on the flag.
Mississippi NAACP president Derrick Johnson says he'll ask the
SEC not to host tournaments in the state because his group
considers the flag offensive.
