Missing woman's body found in marshy area

HOUMA, La. (AP) Terrebonne Parish sheriff's deputies in an airboat have found the body of a 26-year-old woman reported missing Friday.

Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois says the body of 26-year-old Merell Stewart of Gray was found Tuesday in marsh about 5 miles from her home, near the intersection of U.S. 90 and Louisiana Highway 20.

He says it appeared to have been dumped from the elevated highway near Chacahoula.

Deputies had been looking for Stewart since Saturday.

Nobody has been arrested in her disappearance. Bourgeois says her boyfriend, 24-year-old Corey Galmore, is among several possible suspects. Galmore told her family Friday that Stewart hadn't returned from a Thursday evening study session.

He's being held without bond for failing to appear in court on an unrelated charge.
