The search for a missing Erath man is sparking the attention of law enforcement in and outside of the U.S.
20-year-old Damien Trahan was last seen leaving his job at Champagne's Supermarket in Erath a week ago.
This is the first missing person's case in Erath since Police Chief Gerald Hebert took office seven years ago.
Authorities believe Trahan is in Mexico. His family reported him missing two days after he disappeared. Police traced Trahan's credit card activity to Texas. They say he stopped at a grocery and to fill up. Erath Police Chief Hebert says Trahan's vehicle was later found abandoned near Corpus Christi, Texas.
"You can see there was a lot of activity around his vehicle. It wasn't damaged, but it was locked when it was found. It seems like he may have fallen asleep, but we can't say for sure he was the person driving. We haven't been able to place him at the truck," said Hebert.
Police believe Trahan left on his own accord, but he is in danger.
"He chose to go there for whatever reason. Whether he had some type of issue down here he was dealing with or his mental state," said Hebert.
The Chief says Border Patrol agents saw Trahan crossing into Neuvo Laredo, Mexico Saturday after he went missing.
"The border patrol was very unaware that he was even missing when they saw him that Saturday. They said the spoke to him, but he wasn't aware Damien was even missing."
Employees at Champagne's Grocery in Erath are in disbelief after 20-year-old Damien Trahan went on break, not returning to work.
"It's weird. He was a really good worker, we depended on him and he's very dependable," said Patricia Trahan.
She has worked at Champagne's more than thirty years and says customers are questioning where Damien is.
"I wish he'd call us and let us know. We miss him. Come talk to us, let us know what's going on."
Police believe Trahan is traveling alone in Mexico, but are not sure. If you have any information on his disappearance, call Erath Police.
