KATC has received several reports from people around Acadiana receiving a text message that appears to be from MidSouth Bank. The message notifies them that their "Visa #443532 has been temporarily DE-ACTIVATED." The message instructs the receiver to "Please call MidSouth Card Services 24hrs line (337) 350-3344."
This message is fraudulent. This is the third known debit card scam this year. If you receive this message, or one like it, please do not respond and delete the message. This scam is targeting all members of the community, regardless of which financial institution they bank with.
Your financial institution will never ask for your personal account information over the phone, in a letter, email or text message. If you did not call them first it is best that you do not give out your information.
If you think you have fallen victim to a fraudulent attack and your personal information has been compromised, please contact your financial institution immediately.
MidSouth Bank is offering the following advice to its customers:
Phone Scams (vishing) - NEVER provide personal information unless you initiated the call or it is from a trusted source. Do not press options or give out account numbers or debit card numbers to anyone you do not know or did not call. If you have inadvertently provided account information to a caller, contact the bank immediately.
Email Scams (phishing) - NEVER click on links provided in an unfamiliar email or enter account information into an unfamiliar site. Delete unidentified emails from your computer immediately, unless you know the sender. If there is a question on the authenticity of the email, call the sender to verify it. If you have inadvertently provided account information, contact the bank immediately.
Monitor accounts online regularly to confirm all charges and transactions are correct.
Please report any suspicious incidents, calls or transactions to your financial institution.
Pass along the information to educate family and friends.
If you think you or someone you know has fallen victim to this scam, immediately contact the LOUISIANA Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.
