LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Police officers and emergency medical workers were among about 70 men who pranced through a Lake Charles mall in women's high-heeled shoes to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault and money to help its victims.

Organizer Tammy Vincent tells The American Press that Saturday's event, called "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes," raised about $10,000.

She says the light-hearted event gets people talking about serious problems that many communities don't want to admit are happening.

John Shearman came from a 24-hour shift with Acadian Ambulance. His wife - a sexual assault nurse examiner and an event organizer - picked out his glittery purple heels.

It's the event's second year. DeQuincy Police Chief Mike Suchanek and four of his officers have participated in the walk both years.
