Members of a Lafayette Health Club are upset after it abruptly shut its doors last week.
Lafayette Health Club owner, John Robino, filed for bankruptcy back in March. The debt totaling more than $600,000. According to his attorney, he was hoping to get out of the red with a strong membership campaign over the summer, which was unsuccessful.
Now members are looking for refunds, and another gym.
After going to the lafayette health club everyday for the last two years, member Zach David, was surprised the doors were closed without warning. He says he's frustrated he was charged for a full month, that he can't use.
"I'm already looking for another gym right now to go to," said David. "Just because I feel that if Lafayette Health Club would have actually cared for their members, then they would have at least let us know that 'Hey the gym's going to be closing down,' not just, 'Hey get a little cute sign on the door that says we're closed until further notice.'"
While the health club sits vacant, the owner is hoping a buyer comes in so the club can reopen.
"Obviously our last option would be to sell it out right piece mill," said Bankruptcy Attorney Rick Keating. "But we do own the facility, we do own the land, we do own the equipment and so we're going to start having to think seriously if, in the near future, we don't get an investor what we have to do. We may have to end up liquidating."
Keating says club owners were unaware people were still being charged, and apologizes for any inconvenience it may have caused.
"I think just in the timing of it all, we stopped what we could," said Keating. "I think some of those drafts would have occurred right after the 15th, it's unfortunate. We apologize, and regret, that it happened, but that money will be refunded."
