LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A McNeese State dormitory empty since Hurricane Rita is coming down.
It will take about two to three weeks to demolish five-story Burton Hall. University spokeswoman Candace Townsend says its three-story replacement will open in summer 2013, able to hold 150 students.
Big shearer machines began chewing at old dormitory's walls on Friday.
School officials considered imploding the building, but other buildings were too close.
Townsend says that although Burton Hall appeared structurally sound, the roof peeled back during the storm in September 2005, and there was a lot of interior damage. There also was asbestos to deal with.
She says the university completed Federal Emergency Management Agency paperwork earlier this year.
