NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Musician Irvin Mayfield Jr. will play a
hand-built trumpet dedicated to the memory of his father and others who died in the floods of Hurricane Katrina when a historic marker is unveiled in New Orleans' Gentilly neighborhood.
The advocacy group Levees.org will host the Friday evening ceremony at the site where a levee breached along the London Avenue Canal.
It's the second time that Levees.org has worked with
flood-damaged neighborhoods to erect a commemorative plaque. The first was dedicated last year at the 17th Street Canal breach site in the Lakeview neighborhood.
The group also is working to have breach sites in Lakeview and in the Lower 9th Ward placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
