The State Department of Transportation has adjusted the speed on a portion of US 167 running through Maurice. The speed limit on the southern outskirts of town has been reduced from 65 miles per hour to 55. Mayor Wayne Theriot says village officials asked DOTD to study this change two years ago due to business development in the area and citizens concerns of high speeds. Theriot adds the new speed limit gives drivers a chance to gradually slow down while entering the city. Currently, northbound drivers go from 65 miles per hour to 55 miles per hour.
Theriot reminds drivers that the new speed limit does not affect the portion of 167 in the northern part of town along the Vermilion/Lafayette Parish Line.
