The Lafayette Master Gardener Association's June meeting featured a presentation highlighting the efforts of our School Gardens Initiative.
Beginning at noon today at the Clifton Chenier Auditorium, provided individual highlights of the six Lafayette Parish Schools that have implemented the program during the 2013-2014 school year. These school gardens are a collaborative effort between school administration, faculty, students, Lafayette Master Gardeners and the LSU AgCenter' s 4-H Youth Development Program.
School gardens are a wonderful way to use an outside classroom to connect students with nature and a food source. The program is engaging them in valuable lessons focused on gardening, science, math, health and nutrition as well as life skill development. These lessons are integrated with a variety of subjects, such as math, science, art, health and physical education, and social studies, as well as several educational goals, including personal and social responsibility.
