MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) - Volunteers for the Northlake Nature Center plan to plant more than 1,000 longleaf pine seedlings in areas of St. Tammany Parish that were heavily damaged by pine beetles in the 1990s and then hurt again by hurricanes in 2005.
A nature center spokeswoman says the work will be done Jan. 25 and Feb. 1.
The seedlings were purchased with private donations and support from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.
The center is seeking volunteers to help with the plantings. More information is available by calling 985-626-1238.
The Northlake Nature Center is a nonprofit organization that manages a 400-acre nature preserve east of Mandeville.
