Mary Morrison, wife of outgoing Lafayette City-Parish Councilman Purvis Morrison was appointed to serve out the remaining year of her husband's term. Mr. Morrison was elected the Mayor of Scott back in the fall, and it was during his campaign that his wife first thought about seeking the seat.
"As more and more people asked me to do this, I said 'this is something I would like to experience and do for district one' and that's how it all came about," said Mary Morrison.
Although she was approved by a vote of 6-2, her appointment was not without critics.
"It is the position of the Tea Party of Lafayette that it is inappropriate for Mr. Purvis Morrison's wife Mary to be appointed to serve as council member of district one," said Joyce Linde with the Tea Party of Lafayette.
Speaking before the 8-member council just before Tuesday night's vote, Linde called the scenario a conflict of interest, something Mary Morrison denied.
"No it's not it's something that the people of district one wanted and I think it's all about the people and giving them what they want," said Mrs. Morrison.
Mrs. Morrison will serve the remaining one year left in her husband's term; the district one seat is up for election in the fall, but Mrs. Morrison will not be eligible to run.
