SIMMESPORT, La. (AP) - A highway construction and demolition company is moving from Marksville to Simmesport for the deepwater access of the Port of Avoyelles.
Brudd Construction Co. LLC broke ground Friday on a 3,600-square-foot office building and hopes to start later this year on a 12,000-square-foot building for construction, trucking and material sales, The Town Talk reported.
Officials say the office building should be completed this year.
The Atchafalaya River's 18-foot draft means big oceangoing barges can use it - an important consideration as Brudd expands into importing and selling materials, company president Brad Augustine said.
The company, which started operations in 2008, specializes in highway subcontracting for work such as chip seals, drainage and demolition.
It has 35 employees and expects to add 27 more when its expansion at the port is complete.
