Manslaughter verdict upheld in Natchitoches death

NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Shawn Shelton, a former police officer convicted of the killing of a 19-year-old Winnfield man in Natchitoches.

The conviction and sentence were previously upheld by the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal in Lake Charles.

Natchitoches Parish District Attorney Van Kyzar tells The Town Talk the Supreme Court upheld the manslaughter verdict against Shelton for the killing of Justin James Oct. 30, 2005.

Shelton was convicted of manslaughter by a Natchitoches Parish jury following a weeklong trial in 2010.

The cause of death was an overdose of a mixture of morphine, Xanax and cocaine.

District Judge Eric R. Harrington sentenced Shelton to 30 years in prison.

Shelton is currently serving time in a Nevada prison for sexual assault.
