Man shot during robbery attempt

A Lafayette man was shot during an attempted robbery on his carport this morning after pushing his children inside his house to keep them from harm.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., Lafayette Police say they responded to the 100 block of Tennessee after receiving a report of an armed robbery.

According to police, the 55-year-old victim was confronted by two men beneath the carport as he exited his home. The two suspects demanded money from him, at which time he shoved his two children back into the residence.

Police say that when he turned towards the suspects again, one of them shot him once in the stomach with a handgun. The suspects were last seen fleeing on foot towards Louisiana Avenue.

The victim was transported to an area hospital and is listed in guarded condition.

The two suspects are described as black males with one of the suspects wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and the second wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. Police said they were told three black males had been standing near the intersection of Center and Tennessee streets prior to the robbery.
