Man pleads guilty to theft from naval base store

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Covington man has pleaded guilty to a charge he embezzled roughly $50,000 from a store on the Naval Support Activity base in New Orleans.

Forty-year-old Gary Massie faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine following his guilty plea Thursday to one count of theft of government funds.

Federal prosecutors say Massie worked as a loss prevention manager at the Naval Exchange Store located on the base. He allegedly stole the money in 2010 by removing money from cash registers at the store's customer service desk and tried to disguise the thefts by creating fraudulent refund tickets.

Massie's sentencing is set for June 28.
