BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A 70-year-old Evangeline Parish man arrested in March for illegally burning waste tires has pleaded guilty in state court.
The state Department of Environmental Quality said Thursday that Leroy Hardy, of Basile, entered a plea to one felony count of disposing of a substance which could endanger human life and health before state District Judge Thomas F. Fuselier in Ville Platte.
Authorities say Hardy was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and fined $1,000. He also was ordered to clean the property and pay $960 to DEQ for the cost of the investigation.
Hardy was arrested after a tire burning complaint at his home, which is near the Basile Headstart Child Care Center. He was previously cited in 2012 for similar violations that occurred on two occasions in 2011.
