LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A 27-year-old Lake Charles man has
pleaded guilty to beating another man to death in 2009.
Phillips Cooks faces up to 40 years in prison on a charge of manslaughter.
Judge Kent Savoie ordered the probation and parole office on Monday to prepare a presentencing report, delaying sentencing until Jan. 12.
Cooks was arrested in the death of 58-year-old Robert Cannon. Cooks was originally booked with second-degree murder, but grand jurors instead indicted him on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
